Topher apologizing about "Foxtrot" speaking the wrong kind of Chinese. That is SO a reference to Firefly... Foxtrot... F... "Firefly". IIRC, some people who actually spoke Chinese actually did complain that they went with like, I dunno, something like a Taiwanese or Hong Kong dialect of the language, instead of Cantonese or Mandarin. And yes, there's a pretty big difference between those dialects :PAlso, though it's not necessarily a "reference" per se, I'm starting to think that it's universal Jossymbolism to have otherworldly or mentally malleable "broken" characters, in bare feet. All of the Dolls, River Tam from Firefly... even "Mellie" the first time we see her is barefoot. Although... maybe it IS a sly little nod, since Mellie has... holy crap, they both have a Kill Trigger Password that gives them awesome ninja-like skills! THAT IS SO TOTALLY A NOD. :O Well... or maybe not. Maybe he just has a thing for women in bare feet. But STILL... damn. Not a nod to a specific series (though it would be accurate for Angel, and for Buffy's history on WB), but the fact that the actives are contracted for "five years" is surely a reference to the "Five Year Plan" that most networks like their writers to have now, yes?
