Dollhouse as update of The Prisoner
Apr 12 2009, 9:08 AM EDT
The Dollhouse is an insightful update of ‘The Prisoner‘ and it’s ‘Village’. As such, Dollhouse might be made even more entertaining by having homages to The Prisoner. Perhaps Echo could be seen driving a Lotus Super Seven in the same green-and-yellow livery as the original. Also, maybe an episode could actually be filmed at the Portmeirion Village. Or perhaps either Topher Brink or Adelle DeWitt could have a small scale replica of a penny-farthing in their office. Of course, DeWitt herself, might look ‘smashing’ in a piped jacket in the style that Number 6 wore. Do you find this valuable? |

I thought it was my age (having been exposed to The Prisoner as a teenager), but I kind of see the Dollhouse as the Prisoner on steroids. Yes, I can see the whole shebang as being dolls... Adele as a doll, Topher as a doll, etc. Give 'em numbers and we're there. The borders of "the Village" got bigger, and the tabula rasa warehouse is like the "Hospital" in the Village. I think an assignment to that village would be smashing, but I do not know if the budget would allow that. All that, assuming there is a second season. We'll keep the Brit's stiff upper lip for the time being, but all bets are off if Fox lowers the boom on Dollhouse. Do you find this valuable? |

I do need to look up this Prisoner though. Sounds interesting. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

The Prisoner on Steroids, Indeed( Spoiler alert regarding The Prisoner ) Without a doubt, the most obvious similarities are that both the Dollhouse and the Village are secretly located, and both would appear to be, at least on the surface, pleasant locales. Both are populated by happy - and very obedient - people. The Village appears a whimsical collection of pastel buildings, and the Dollhouse, an airy agora of paneled wood, foliage, small pools and cushions. As well as casket-sized sleep chambers. But both are, in fact, oblivions: insidious asylums where people are taken to chambers to have their brains zapped with mind control. Brainwashed by fiendish machines and scientists. And in the case of Dollhouse, the pace has been quickened; things, after all, do move much faster now than they did in 1967. The message however, remains the same: individuals should be neither numbers, nor fantasies to be exploited, but rather free, real people. But then again, when Number Six finally does come face-to-face with Number One, it is Six’s own visage that he sees. Rousseau would have keenly enjoyed Dollhouse. One might say that both the Village, as well as the Dollhouse, are in desperate need of genuine Social Contracts. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"I do need to look up this Prisoner though. Sounds interesting."It's available on Netflix, I have the full set of the DVDs personally. It lasted 17 episodes if memory serves. Patrick McGoohan (recently deceased) was much of the brains and will behind it. It shows a bit dated (child of the 60's) today, but back in the days before VCRs it was "appointment TV" for my mother (who always loved a good mystery) and me. Do you find this valuable? |

I thought the same thing, starting with the pilot. (See now-outdated notes on the dystopia page: http://dollhousewiki.fox.com/page/Dollhouse+Dystopia+Compare+&+Contrast )In particular, "Needs" was an episode that took me right back to "The Chimes of Big Ben". I was disappointed with Dollhouse at first, but starting with episode 6, the writing has been downright masterful. And the better it gets, the more its similarities with The Prisoner come to the forefront. Kudos to two great shows. Do you find this valuable? |

"Oh the bets are definitely off...(sinister chuckle). It's an amazing show, although it had one of the most unsatisfying series finales of all time, IMO. Still, you need to watch it! Do you find this valuable? |

Gee, JW indeed remembers The Prisoner, and some real homage to the show is JW's use or exposing story arcs that use almost formal Deductive Logic to uncover the conspiracies (tors) in Doll House. Logic is what, IMHO, numbre 6 was seen using to pursue escape.and in the first series of eps of Doll House, can the viewer remember the shout out to *Clockwork Orange*? Twice "Just Like Clockwork* " Like Clockwork" JW wanted to make sure. Do you find this valuable? |
