If you found out you had once been a doll how would you react?
Jan 9 2009, 3:17 PM EST
If you found out you had been a doll and you had been mindwiped which of the things you had done would bother you most, and why?Would it be the romantic missions because you had slept with total strangers, the violent missions or something else? or would none of it bother you because you had agreed to it all and it you had been very well paid for it? I think the thought of the romantic missions would bother me most. Just the idea that I had slept with a lot of strangers would be very hard for me to deal with. Also just the thought that I had spent 5 years of my life completely in someone elses control would trouble me. Do you find this valuable?

I agree with you about the romantic missions, though men might have a different perspective. ;)Any kind of intimate encounters that I couldn't remember would bother me and make me feel violated. Ignorance is bliss, however. I'm great at denial, so I'd just convince myself they had me doing very menial tasks, like secret shopping at a department store. ;) Do you find this valuable? |

"I agree with you about the romantic missions, though men might have a different perspective. ;)"I agree with you about the romantic missions, though men might have a different perspective" Not this one anyway. Perhaps I have kind of an old fashioned, traditional view of relationships but I would not be pleased at the prospect. ""I agree with you about the romantic missions, though men might have a different perspective"You're right, that was actually quite sexist of me. I doubt anyone wants to think about five years of "what-ifs." I will be interested to see if we learn *why* these people volunteered, if indeed they did as the company claims. There are plenty of males (particularly young males) without a moral compass on my other favorite fan forum. Based on the content of what some of them post or claim to believe, many of them would have been proud or boastful of he fact. I just agree with your own thoughts on the topic. Ah yes, rabid fanboys / fangirls can be quite creepy at times! I have been going to sci-fi and comic conventions since I was a kid and I'll never get used to some of the awkwardness when standing in line for autographs. Do you find this valuable? |

This brings up a variety of issues, but I'll focus on the fact that I would have done many things wrong, and out of character, ASSUMING the mind wipe process had the effect of destroying a person's moral/ethical sense (which I doubt it would, were this real, but whatever.) What would I do if I realized I had done horrible things? The same thing I actually do when I realize I've done horrible things now, IRL. I trust that there is the possibility of redemption and reconciliation to the arbiter of all things moral, ethical and pertaining to Truth. All I have to do is confess, repent, and I've got a slate cleaner than that of the dolls after their minds are wiped. I can go on with my life and pursuit of righteousness.Yeah, it would be tough, there'd be the need for healing, and I'd have to forgive myself and make reparations to anyone I found I had hurt. But I'd be willing to go through all that for the sake of getting right with the only one that really matters. Do you find this valuable? |

" "Could we compare it to waking up after a night of partying and suddenly realizing what you've done? No, it's probably much different than that. IMO, it wasn't really the Dolls who were doing those things. They were being controlled, so I don't know how guilty they should feel... of course, they are supposedly volunteering. I just want to know more about this process. Can't wait for the show to start! Do you find this valuable? |

While all reactions noted are valid, I think that the essential question when you discover that you had been a doll is this:Who am I, really? Is the person that I think I am now, who I was before? What does SELF mean, now that I have been so many others? This is a fundamental question in philosophy and psychology, couched in a different way, as Joss loves to do. He likes to make you think. I am sure that he will explore this theme as the series continues. It's something each of us should do regularly. The question is not, "What did I do when I was a doll?" It is "Who am I?" What if you had NOT been a volunteer? Then what if the things you did were anathema to your personal ethics and you somehow found out you'd been programmed to do them by sociopaths, who'd then profited quite handsomely from your degradation? This show pretty much had to be based upon a volunteer premise, otherwise you would have found yourself--as a writer/producer--in very nasty territory. But I'd still like to see a more realistic approach someday, where mind controlled human slaves are presented as the victims they truly are...but I doubt if the public is anywhere near ready for that kind of sordid tragedy. Someday, perhaps.LilyPat Do you find this valuable? |

If I found out I had been a doll, I would be so P.O. that I couldn't remember all the awesome stuff I did. Including the great sex I must have had. Seeing I was programed to be great at it, then it must have been good, right?

I would submit a list of skills I would like to be programed with to use for the rest of my life and apply to be a handler or the like.

I guess the real question would be if I found out I was a doll as myself or someone I was imprinted as cause if I was someone else there is no way to determine how I would respond. If it were me though I would be kinda happy about it. It is not like I don't love my life now but there is something almost liberating about the idea that you could literally be anyone and that no matter what happened how much hurt you suffered it would never stay with you. I think that the idea is amazing. So people control you the fact is people try to almost all your life at least the dollhouse project is more upfront about the control. And if you ever were let out it would be extra cool if they kept files of what you did. The self esteem boost I mean you would do things you could think you could do otherwise and though they can make you have muscle memory and everything else there isn't anyway they could force your body to do something it is physically incapable of doing so knowing all the stuff you had done with someone elses thoughts really wipes away all thoughts of incapability. In the show or in real life I would be more then willing to be a doll. Do you find this valuable? |

I think I would be nervous. Would you (I'm using you in general) really be you if you had been taken out of your body? Then I guess I would have to think about it for a while. What makes a person if personality can be separated from the body and you can just go on the database? Which is the real you? Are they all? Or does the personality have to be in the original body to be you?

I'd have to say the whole losing memories would be my biggest dissapointment. I already have to take so many pictures to remember life to its fullest...

I don't know. How can I feel about something that I cannot remember? Because this is where you start to get into identity, the ghost in teh machine as it were. after all did what happen, happen to you?

I think the romantic missions and the missions that involved killing someone. That would really suck. Knowing I slept with god knows how many strangers and killing people for whatever reason would make me feel pretty bad.

I would feel devasted. Although on a dark note, I think it would be humorous to think ata time I was an assain. Only because I could never see myself kill someone so easily.

"I would submit a list of skills I would like to be programed with to use for the rest of my life and apply to be a handler or the like."YES. While I would be a little upset that I had been a doll, I would probably not mind if I had no memory of it. If I had no memory of it, then to me (the me at that time anyway), it didn't happen. It doesn't affect me. And some extra coll ninja skills would help balm any wounds I had. ;-) Do you find this valuable? |
