Dollhouse Season 1 Episode 2 “The Target”
Written and Directed by Stephen S. DeKnight
Original Airdate: 02/20/09

[All the little imprint pictures bring us to the previously-ons]

[Open on several Dolls are being ushered into the pod room by a nurse-looking woman. There is an alarm droning. Th title at bottom of screen reads: “THREE MONTHS AGO.”]

Male Doll: What’s that sound?

Nurse-looking lady: It’s nothing. Please get into your beds.

Female Doll: But we haven’t had our shower. We always shower before…

Nurse-looking lady: Everything’s all right. Please get into your beds.

[The pods close on the frightened looking Dolls]

[Cut to the stairs where armed-Laurence Dominic is descending with many heavily-armed security people]

Laurence Dominic: Secure the exits. Anyone tries to breach, shoot then in the head twice.

Guard: Yes, sir.

[Dominic passes bloody dead people]

Dominic: Topher. Topher!

[He approaches Topher Brink, whose shirt is splattered with blood]

Topher Brink: Guns—can I have one?

Dominic: What happened?

Topher: Yeah, that’s… uh, that’s the thing, happened. He just…

Dominic: Who?

Topher: Doc Saunders looks like a jigsaw puzzle, and what he did to Samuelson…

Dominic: Who?

[Adelle DeWitt joins them]

Adelle DeWitt: Alpha. It appears we’ve had a composite event.

Dominic: Wh–? He gets wiped after every engagement, like all the rest. How could he composite?

Topher: Can’t. Shouldn’t. Did.

Security Man (over radio): Target acquired.

Dominic (in radio): Where?

Security Man: Level 3, corridor 37. Target…

[Rapid gunfire is heard and a quick scream comes from the other end of the radio, before it goes out]

Dominic (to guards in room): Move out.

Topher: Seriously. Gun?

[Cut to Dominic and other guards moving through corridors, passing dead bodies as they go. They enter the showers and raise their guns at something in the center. We see that all the Dolls are dead. Except Echo, who is sitting in the middle, naked and covered in blood.]

Echo: They won’t wake up.

[Everyone lowers their guns. Dominic grabs his radio.]

Dominic: Negative contact. Continuing sweep.

[Go to credits]

[Open on the pods opening as we hear Adelle speak]

Adelle: In their resting state, our Actives are as innocent and vulnerable ac children.

[Cut to Adelle, in her office]

Adelle: We call it the tabula rasa, the blank slate.

[Cut to Echo getting out of a van with Boyd Langton in the drop-off area]

Adelle: Now imagine the imprint process, filling it, creating a new personality. A friend, a lover, a… confidant in a sea of enemies.

[Cut back to Adelle]

Adelle: Your heart’s desire made flesh.

[Echo gets into the elevator and waves goodbye to Boyd. We see her in the imprint chair.]

Adelle: And when the engagement has been completed, all memory of you and your time together will be wiped clean.

[Echo is wiped and is raised up in the chair]

Topher: Hello, Echo. How are you feeling?

Echo: Did I fall asleep?

Topher: For a little while.

Echo: Shall I go now?

Topher: If you like.

[Echo gets up to leave]

[Cut back to Adelle, where we see that she has been talking to a client, Richard Connell]

Richard Connell: Neat trick.

Adelle: Tricks are illusions, Mr. Connell, constructed to deceive. What we offer is truth.

Connell: Rare commodity.

Adelle: Hence the exuberant price tag.

Connell: I’ve been with a lot of women, Miss DeWitt. That’s not bragging. That’s just what you would call truth. And not one of them turned out to be who they said they were. Not when it really came down to it. Your services may be expensive, but at least this time, I’ll be the one telling the girl what to lie about.

Adelle: Oh, she won’t lie to you, Mr. Connell. Everything you want, everything you need… she will be. Honestly and completely.

Connell: (chuckles) That will be something new.

Adelle: There is, however, one small problem.

Connell: I thought everything was good with the background check.

Adelle: That’s not our concern.

[Adelle gets up and goes to the bar where she writes down something]

Adelle: Your engagement has been flagged as… a moderate risk to our Active. Nothing serious. Our company policy requires a small additional fee against any unforeseen complications.

[She hands the now risen Connell the piece of paper with the fee on it]

Connell: (laughing) Small, huh?

Adelle: To my employers, very.

Connell: Well… if this girl’s everything you promise, it will be worth it.

Adelle: Just make sure you return her safe and sound. Otherwise there will be additional costs.

Connell: (chuckles) I’ll keep it low-key.

[Cut to Echo/Jenny and Connell whitewater rafting. They are having tons of fun. They then pull the raft up on the shore. They are both laughing.]

Connell: Not bad… not bad.

Echo/Jenny: You should see me on a five.

Connell: Thought that was a five.

Echo/Jenny: Three, three and a half, maybe. If it were a five, I’d be fishing you out of the drink.

Connell: You think so, huh?

[They kiss]

Echo/Jenny: Huh.

[They kiss again]

Echo/Jenny: And so. Now get your ass moving (she slaps him on the rear for effect) before I leave you for the wolves…

[She goes to the raft and picks up her pack and tosses him his.]

Echo/Jenny: …or whatever they got around here that eats guys who can’t keep up.

Connell: Yes, ma’am.

[Cut to a hand on a rock… which belongs to Echo/Jenny… who is scaling the rock with Connell]

Connell: You know what they say about looking down.

Echo/Jenny: Don’t?

[We see how high up they are]

Connell: Really don’t.

[Grunting and panting as Echo/Jenny tries to find a solid hold to continue up]

Connell: Are you okay?

Echo/Jenny: Yeah.

[She grunts, grabs valiantly at the rock, but her hand slips. She screams as she falls.]

Connell: Jenny!

[Her line catches and she stops falling. She looks terrified.]

Echo/Jenny: Oh, God!

[Connell looks really worried. Her tone changes completely and she laughs.]

Echo/Jenny: Oh, God, the look on your face!

Connell: (sighs) Oh. That’s not funny. You know how much trouble I’d be in if you went splat?

Echo/Jenny: Yeah. My brothers would kill you.

Connell: Quit screwing around.

Echo/Jenny: All right, wuss. Come on. Let’s race to the top.

[Cut to the forest where we pan over to…]

Topher Brink’s voice: Everything looks beautiful from here. Vitals are right online.

[…a black van. Boyd Langton is inside the back, staring at a computer screen. He’s wearing a headset.]

Boyd Langton: What about her adrenaline?

[Cut to Topher, sitting in front of his computer in the imprint lab. He’s eating his lunch.]

Topher: Uh, it’s within engagement parameters.

[Cut to Boyd]

Boyd: Are you sure? She’s elevating toward redline.

[Cut to Topher, who’s sipping on a juice box. He goes down stairs to the level below him while he’s talking.]

Topher: Relax, Mountain Man. I’ve been reading the squigglies long enough to discern the diff between excitement and “Sweet mother, I’m gonna die.” She’s fine. Hey… go soak up some nature. Okay, like, uh, smell the honey.

[Cut to Boyd, whose computer screen is fritzing out. Back to Topher.]

Topher: (laughs) Hassle a grizzly. Leave the science to the science guy.

[Back to Boyd]

Boyd: Well, how about clearing up my signal, Professor? My displays are crap.

[Topher]

Topher: You’re in the middle of “Why Would Anyone Want to be There?” What did you expect, HBO?

[Boyd]

Boyd: Can’t you retask one of the auxiliary satellites, uh, give me some more coverage?

Topher: What’s the magic word?

Boyd: Please.

[Topher]

Topher: I was actually looking for “abracadabra.” But that’ll do.

[Topher climbs up the railing back to his computer]

Topher: Okay, retasking… satellite… 7115.

[Boyd, sipping coffee]

Topher: It’s gonna take a few to move it into alignment.

Boyd: Thanks.

Topher: Anything for you.

[Topher, at computer]

Topher: ‘Cause I love you.

[Boyd]

Topher: Deep, deep man love.

[Boyd clicks off his headset. New angle lets us see both Boyd and the guy driving the van.]

Driver: The woods.

Boyd: Yep.

Driver: I hate the woods.

[Boyd]

Boyd: Yep.

[Cut to the house where the Crestejo girl was taken in ep 1. Ballard pulls up in his car. Ballard shows his badge and goes inside. He examines the door that was broken in to. We see somebody checking something out with a magnifying glass. His name is Shaw.]

Ballard: Doesn’t add up, does it?

[Tanaka enters]

Tanaka: Ballard? Hell are you doing here? This is a straight kidnap.

Shaw: What doesn’t add up?

Tanaka: Yeah. Why don’t you give us the inside view on how this all… leads to the Dollhouse? Or alternate plan: why don’t you just let us do our jobs?

Ballard: Doesn’t add up, does it?

Shaw: Not all of it.

Tanaka: We got three pros come up from Mexico…

[We see flashbacks to the killing that went down in the house last ep]

Tanaka: … and a disgruntled science teacher.

[Back to Tanaka. Ballard is examining a large bullet hole in the wall.]

Tanaka: They take the Crestejo girl for ransom, they they fall out…

[Flashbacks then Tanaka]

Tanaka: …and makes everybody’s life easier.

Ballard: But the money’s gone.

Tanaka: So, there’s a fifth guy, and he’s right now loving life.

Ballard: He the one packing the cannon?

[He acknowledges the large hole]

Shaw: He’d have to be. That weapon’s not here.

Tanaka: Fifth guy took it.

[Ballard goes to the blown-in door]

Ballard: After he blows the door in? Which is funny. He’s in the room with his buddies, then he has to blow the door in?

[More flashbacks, this time of Sierra blowing the door in. Back to annoyed Tanaka.]

Shaw: So, no fifth guy. You think Crestejo sent someone after them?

Ballard: Well, he swears he didn’t.

Tanaka: Hey, tell me you didn’t go near my vic.

Ballard: I just hear the talk. Crestejo’s an interesting guy, though. Fits a certain profile.

Tanaka: Yeah, I know. He’s rich, he’s respectable, but maybe he’s got a kinky side he doesn’t want anyone to see, so he goes to the world-famous Dollhouse and hires himself a pretty lady to groove his move and then forget all about it. They can do that, you know, with science.

[Ballard goes back to the wall with the hole]

Ballard: That’s what Davina called her.

Tanaka: What?

Ballard: Crestejo’s daughter. She said the pretty lady came and saved her.

[Flashes to Echo saving Davina. Back to tanaka.]

Tanaka: You did talk…

Ballard: Shaw, we got any pretty lady prints?

Shaw: We got the dead guys and the kid, no one else.

Tanaka: Will you stop humoring…

Shaw: And a couple areas definitely wiped down.

Tanaka: So, what? The Dollhouse sends one of its brainwashed beauties to— to take out a kidnapping ring? That’s a full-service organization.

[Ballard bends down and picks up, with his pen, the pair of glasses Echo was wearing]

Tanaka: It’s the little girl’s, right?

Ballard: I’d check it out.

Tanaka: Hey, Agent Ballard thinks we should investigate. Thanks for the tip. Why don’t you just leave us to go find your pretty lady?

[Ballard starts to walk out]

Ballard: I will.

Tanaka: Be careful. Looks here likes she’s pretty bad-ass.

[Cut to the tip of an arrow. Connell is talking. Move to Echo, who is holding the arrow.]

Connell: Carbon shaft, three-blade broadhead.

Echo/Jenny: Damn!

Connell: Shh! You’ll scare away lunch.

Echo/Jenny: Uh, you couldn’t have packed a couple of sandwiches?

Connell: Oh, sandwiches don’t give you a run when you try to eat them. They just lay there waiting for mustard.

Echo/Jenny: I like mustard.

Connell: (laughs) Here.

[He hands her the bow Echo/Jenny sighs as she takes it]

Connell: All right? You’re gripping too tight here. Here.

[He helps her with it]

Connell: Relax your hand. You want the riser to just rest there, pressing against your palmer crease.

Echo/Jenny: Sounds dirty.

Connell: (laughs) It’s your lifeline, in your palm.

[We get a close-up of his hand resting on her stomach. She puts her hand on top of his.]

Connell: You grip the riser too hard, your shot’ll torque.

Echo/Jenny: You’re pretty good at this, aren’t you?

Connell: My dad taught me.

[He steps away from her, taking the bow as he is about to get conversational]

Connell: He was a big believer in, uh…

[He slaps a hand to his bicep]

Echo/Jenny: What? Was that a salute? Do I have to learn a salute?

[She brings a fist to her shoulder]

Connell: (laughs) It’s, uh, shoulder to the wheel.

[He is getting something out of his pack]

Connell: Do the work, earn your way. If you can bring down something bigger than you, with just this, you proved you deserve to eat it. If it gets away, it proved it deserves to live, and you go hungry.

[He straps something onto her wrist]

Connell: Dad thought we all take too much for granted.

Echo/Jenny: And you?

Connell: Oh, I appreciate every moment. Particularly this one.

[He gets close again, helping her with the bow as she attaches the strap thingy to the bow]

Echo/Jenny: I’m not the first one you’ve brought into the woods, am I?

Connell: Uh… no. But so far… you’re the only one that hasn’t been a disappointment.

[He strokes her hair and goes to kiss her. Their lips almost touch, but she sees something move out of the corner of her eye]

Echo/Jenny: (gasps) Richard.

[We cut to a deer ambling about, minding its own damn business. He gets behind her to help her with the bow.]

Echo/Jenny: What do I do?

Connell: Extend your bow arm. That’s right. Now, draw back. Keep your elbow high. That’s right. Never take a shot unless you’re sure it’ll put your target down.

[Cut to deer eating some grass]

Connell: Aim for the flank, right below the shoulders. Now just release.

[She lets go and it flies. We hear it hit, but instead we see her falling back down on top of him in a sleeping bag in a tent. Everyone’s panting.

Connell: Is there anything you’re not good at?

[Laughing all around]

Echo/Jenny: I think that little thing I did with my tongue could use some work.

[She kisses his neck]

Connell: You really are the perfect woman.

[She kisses him]

Echo/Jenny: Not too shabby yourself.

[Kissing and panting and laughing all mixed up]

Connell: You don’t slow down, do you?

Echo/Jenny: Oh, I like to live.

[These two can’t seem to stop laughing and kissing]

Echo/Jenny: Mmm. A lot.

[She moves her hand down somewhere. More with the laughing.]

Connell: (laughs) Oh.

Echo/Jenny: Let’s see who finishes first this round. I might even let you win.

[Kissing]

Connell: I’d like that. You have no idea how much, but, uh, you need to get going.

[They both laugh as he gets up from underneath her. She sits up a little bit.]

Echo/Jenny: Going… where?

Connell: There’s just enough daylight left to make it back to the main road. Might even flag a ride out of here before I catch up.

Echo/Jenny: Yeah, okay. Am… Am I missing something?

[Connell (who I must admit looks really hot shirtless) zips up his fly]

Echo/Jenny: Richard?

Connell: You need to stop talking now and start running.

[He looks at his watch]

Connell: I’ll give you a five-minute head start.

[Echo /Jenny looks horrified as he grabs the bow and gets all psychotic looking]

Connell: And then I’m coming after you.

[We zoom in on terrified Echo/Jenny and then go to black]
