| This is the episode where we learn everything about Sierra's past that led her to the Dollhouse. The real Sierra was once a struggling artist named Priya, who caught the eye of Nolan Kennard (Vincent Ventresca), a rich man who thinks he can own anything. A flashback to one year ago shows Nolan and Priya meeting for the first time. He is smitten with her and she doesn't really reciprocate those feelings, so he tries to woo her by getting her art career off the ground. Nolan arranges an art show for Priya and uses a few Actives from the Dollhouse to help convince Priya that Nolan is a great guy. The Actives used include Echo and Victor. As usual, Priya and Victor seem to have an instant connection. This upsets Nolan and when Priya flat out rejects him, he turns violent. To make a long story short, Nolan drugs and institutionalizes Priya, which makes her a prime candidate for the Dollhouse. Since Nolan's good friend Harding (Keith Carradine) has close ties to the Rossum Corporation, that is exactly where Priya winds up. Present day, Priya is now the Sierra we know and love. However, she is still troubled by her terrible past and her forced imprisonment in the Dollhouse. Although she can't remember him, she knows there is a bad man who looms over her. She expresses this by painting a black figure over a bird, symbolizing her being haunted by Nolan. Nolan, by the way, is still very much in the picture. He rents Sierra out all the time as different personalities. He's one sick puppy. It is actually Topher who stands up for Sierra by looking deeper into her relationship with Nolan. As far as the Dollhouse is concerned, he's just another happy customer. However, Topher's investigation leads him to realize that Sierra was never really crazy and that it was Nolan who made her appear that way. Adelle is informed of this and she is not happy so she tells Nolan that he can no longer use their services. Nolan turns the tables and said that he actually wants to keep Sierra permanently. Although Adelle first objects to giving Sierra to Nolan, she is ordered to do it by Harding. Her moral high-ground is moot, says Harding, thanks to her occasional hanky panky with Victor. So, it looks like Sierra is about to become Nolan's permanent love slave. But wait -- Topher has a crisis of conscience and goes against the company. Instead of imprinting Sierra the way Nolan wants, he gives her real identity back, Priya. Of course, Priya last remembers being drugged and hospitalized by crazy Nolan, so she is ready to confront him. Things turn ugly very fast and Priya ends up stabbing Nolan to death in his home. Topher shows up to help Priya/Sierra and Boyd makes a call to take care of the body. It's now a secret that Priya killed Nolan, as Boyd covered her tracks. Even Adelle thinks Nolan just skipped town. Priya is understandably upset, as is Topher, who seems to have a heart after all. Before she is wiped again and put back into action as an Active, she makes a request: when Topher finally wakes her up at the end of her Dollhouse contract, she doesn't want to remember anything from the past year. She doesn't even want to know who Nolan is. So, that is the tragic story of how Sierra came to be an Active. While all of this was going on, Boyd was also keeping a close eye on Echo, who is acting strangely. Although he doesn't completely realize how aware she has become, he knows something is up. Ballard was strangely missing from this episode, but we did find out that Echo has been writing down her memories on the inside of her pod. The plot thickens, but we'll have to wait until December to find out what happens next... |

I'm editor for DH over on TV Rage, and someone was wondering who did the centerpiece artwork that Priya displayed at Nolan's show.
